Hello!

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy comes to DVD from G2 Pictures on the 21st of May 2012, after receiving only a limited run in US cinemas. The film, although only released in 2011 was actually shot in mid 2008 but the film remained without a distributor until Samuel Goldwyn Films and Sony Pictures picked it up in early 2011.

When the film was originally made its cast we’re all minor players. Jason Sudeikis was only just starting to establish himself as a prescience on Saturday Night Live, Tyler Labine was best know as Sock, in TV’s Reaper. With Lake Bell, Lindsay Sloane, Martin Starr and Nick Kroll all recognisable faces, but hardly household names.

However by the time the film got round to finally being released all the casts stock had steadily risen. So it was a little bit of a surprise it was dumped, as are the negative reviews the film has received as, to be fair to it, it’s a perfectly decent ensemble comedy, that made me laugh and smile enough to make it easily worth watching.

The premise of the film is that Eric and his friends, Sue (Michelle Borth), Adam (Nick Kroll), Mike (Tyler Labine), Laura (Lindsay Sloane), Kate (Lucy Punch), Glenn (Will Forte), Doug (Martin Starr) and his girlfriend Willow (Angela Sarafyan) and Alison (Lake Bell), all live your average normal thirty-something lives. But Eric has the luxury of the use of his Dads place in the Hamptons, where he throws some legendary theme parties that help him cling on the his youth. When his father tells him that he’s selling the house, Eric needs to think of a big blow out for him and his friends to have one last unforgettable night at the house. This is when Eric and Mike come up with the idea that instead of it being a big bash, it should be small, just this select tight knit group of friends (well not Glenn and Kate, they are getting married), and that they should all have a good old fashioned orgy!

As you can guess, some of the group are up for it and some of the group are not as convinced. But as events in each of their respective lives unfold, it all leads them to the same place. The orgy.

There are plenty of opportunities for this film to go for the cheap laughs, and for the most part it avoids these pitfalls, it’s not high brow by any stretch of the imagination, and at points it’s crass, but it always maintains a level of reality to itself. There is enough character development to actually make you not only understand the group dynamic, but also invest in the relationships they all have with each other. You believe in the reasonings for their deciding on taking part in this very taboo send off.

There are no bad performances in the film, and a lot of praise should go to casting director Susie Farris for managing to find the perfect actors to play the characters that writing/directing duo Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck had written. It’s roles like a casting director, that are often so overlooked. In a film like this where group chemistry is so important, one wrong piece of casting can throw the whole film off balance. But here each actor fits their character as well as you could hope for.

The real stars of the show are Jason Sudeikis, who was also the best thing in his other two 2011 films, the perfectly decent Horrible Bosses and the painfully unfunny Hall Pass. Here Sudeikis has to play the loveable rogue, with oodles of charm, and he pulls it off. But this wouldn’t be possible without his wing man Tyler Labine, the man who should be in so much more, as few can match his comedic charisma. Lake Bell, Michelle Borth, Lindsay Sloane, Angela Sarafyan, Nick Kroll and Martin Starr are all strong as the rest of the group, and their individual quirks help build the group.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy is a very enjoyable adult comedy, that never feels it needs to be more than simply a comedy. Its dramatic moments are there to drive the story, not to give it a false sense of being more than just a comedy. Far too many modern comedy films try and push themselves too far, and have too many character arcs woven in between far too few laughs. This isn’t the case here.

I’ve watched this film a few times now and it’s fair to say ill watch it a few more times over the coming years, why? Because I connected with the characters and it made me smile. And if that’s not enough for people to expect from their comedy, then maybe it’s time our expectations for comedy films were changed back to what they used to be, make people laugh, and be entertaining.
